Nihon University alum Shuya Kamikubo to make ONE Championship debut at ‘ONE: Battle for the Heavens’

One of the proud alumni of Nihon University is Japanese mixed martial artist Shuya “Stealth” Kamikubo, 25. During his studies at the private research university, he dedicated himself to his judo training, achieving several top finishes in major tournaments.

Like Kamikubo, several well-known martial artists studied call Nihon University their alma mater. Among them are UFC fighter Maximo Blanco, judo wrestler Makoto Takimoto, judo instructor Yoshida Yonezuka, karate master Yutaka Yaguchi and sumo wrestlers Kotomitsuki Keiji, Hamanoshima Keishi, Satoyama Kosaku, Ishiura Masakatsu and Higonoumi Naoya.

Born and raised in Yokohama, a part of Japan’s Kawasaki prefecture, Kamikubo is a former collegiate judoka and the DEEP Future King 2014 Tournament Champion. He was inspired to compete in the cage following the success of fellow judoka and Japanese martial arts legend Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, 35.

As a professional MMA fighter, Kamikubo put together an impressive record of 7 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw under four years. He competed mostly in Japanese regional promotions such as Pancrase and Tribe Tokyo Fight.

On July 7, 2018, Kamikubo will compete in ONE Championship for the first time. He is scheduled to fight “The Terminator” Sunoto, 33, of Indonesia in the bantamweight division at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens.” Currently reigning as the ONE Bantamweight World Champion is Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes, 38, of Brazil.

Taking place at the Guangzhou Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China, “ONE: Battle for the Heavens” will be headlined by Yodcherry Sityodtong, 19, of Thailand and Kai Ting “Killer Bee” Chuang, 23, of Chinese Taipei. The winner will be the very first ONE Super Series Kickboxing Atomweight World Champion. .

“World-class martial arts makes a triumphant return to the beautiful city of Guangzhou with another spectacular event,” ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong stated. He added that Yodcherry and Chuang will be joined by “several of the very best martial arts talent from China and the world.”
