Shree Saini, 25, of Seattle, Washington, United States almost won Miss World 2021. She was the first runner-up of the 70th edition of the international beauty pageant.
Hosted by Peter Andre and Fernando Allende, the Miss World 2021 coronation night was held at the Coca-Cola Music Hall in San Juan, Puerto Rico on March 16, 2022. The ceremony featured performances by Miss World 2019 Toni Ann Singh, 26, of Jamaica and the Puerto Rico Philharmonic Orchestra.
Singh has the longest Miss World reign. She was not able to crown her successor in 2020 and in 2021 due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
From 97 candidates, only 40 quarterfinalists were selected to compete during the coronation night. In the end, Karolina Bielawska, 21, of Łódź, Poland was crowned Miss World 2021.
The coronation ceremony was broadcast on REELZ, London Live and Univision. Among the judges were Giselle Laronde, 58, of Trinidad and Tobago, Jacqueline Aguilera, 45, of Venezuela and Vanessa Ponce, 30, of Mexico, who were crowned Miss World in 1986, 1995 and 2018, respectively.
“Which human right do you value the most?” Saini was asked in the question-and-answer portion. She answered, “The human right that I value the most is dignity because when we listen to the other person’s perspective, we’re able to communicate with them, find their problems and give them solutions.”
“So it’s very important that we see everyone as equal even if they live in places or are in situations where they aren’t blessed with the basic rights of shelter, food, water, health care,” Saini continued. “We need to give the gift of dignity and listen and provide solutions and that is exactly what a Miss World does. She helps communities around the world by giving resources and aid, and it would be my highest honor to be your ambassador for Miss World.”
Olivia Yacé, 23, of Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire is second runner-up. Carla Yules, 25, of Surabaya, Indonesia, Karolina Vidales, 24, of Jiquilpan, Mexico and Anna Leitch, 27, of Cookstown, Northern Ireland finished in the Top 6.
Saini was also chosen as the Beauty with a Purpose ambassador. Vidales won the sports event on December 1, 2021 while Yacé won the Top Model competition on December 6, 2021.
