BTS beats Jonas Brothers, Maroon 5 at 2020 American Music Awards

BTS was one of the big winners at the 2020 American Music Awards. Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, 50, the 48th edition of the annual American music awards show took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, United States on November 22, 2020 in front of a limited audience due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Presented by “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson, 50, the Favorite Duo or Group in the pop and rock category was given to BTS, beating Jonas Brothers and Maroon 5. It marked the second consecutive year the K-pop boy band won the award.

Known as Kara’s Flowers from 1994 to 2001, Maroon 5 is led by vocalist Adam Levine, 41. Its other current members are keyboardist PJ Morton, 39, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Jesse Carmichael, 41, lead guitarist James Valentine, 42, multi-instrumentalist Sam Farrar, 42, and drummer Matt Flynn, 50.

Jonas Brothers is a trio formed in 2005. Its members are siblings Kevin Jonas, 33, Joe Jonas, 31, and Nick Jonas, 28.

Big Hit Entertainment formed BTS in 2013 with a debut single titled “2 Cool 4 Skool.” The seven members of the group are Kim Seok Jin, 26, Min Yoon Gi, 26, Jung Ho Seok, 25, Kim Nam Joon, 24, Park Ji Min, 23, Kim Tae Hyung, 23, and Jeon Jung Kook, 21, whose respective stage names are Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook.


Dua Lipa, 25, and “Good Morning America” announced the 2020 American Music Awards nominees on October 26, 2020. She performed “Levitating” during the awards ceremony, which was aired on ABC.

Abel “The Weeknd” Makkonen Tesfaye, 30, tied with country pop music duo Dan Smyers, 33, and Shay Mooney, 28, who are collectively known as Dan + ShayJustin Bieber, 26, and Taylor Swift, 30, as the artists with the most awards. They each received three awards.

The Weeknd sang “In Your Eyes” with Kenneth Bruce “Kenny G” Gorelick, 64, and “Save Your Tears.” BTS performed “Dynamite” and “Life Goes On,” which are both from “Be,” the K-pop group’s ninth studio album released by Big Hit and Columbia on November 20, 2020.
