[PHOTOS] Japan, South Korea vs Malaysia: Yoshihiro Akiyama, Agilan Thani fight at ‘ONE: Legendary Quest’ in China

Japan, South Korea and Malaysia were among the 15 countries represented at “ONE: Legendary Quest.” On the card were both mixed martial arts matches and ONE Super Series contests, featuring both kickboxing and Muay Thai.

ONE Championship held “ONE: Legendary Quest” at the Baoshan Arena in Shanghai, China on June 15, 2019. The co-main event of the evening was between Yoshihiro “Sexyama” Akiyama, 43, of Japan and South Korea and Agilan “Alligator” Thani, 23, of Malaysia.

Akiyama was one of the three representatives of Japan and one of the three representatives of South Korea at “ONE: Legendary Quest” while Thani solely represented Malaysia. Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Morocco, Myanmar, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Scotland, Thailand and the United Kingdom were also represented.

On June 12, 2019, Akiyama and Thani had their official face-off during the press conference at Yunspace in Shanghai. The event was graced by ONE Championship Greater China chairman Hua Fung Teh and reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan, 31, of China.

Blue Corner

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on August 18, 1995, Thani was undefeated as an amateur fighter and turned professional in 2015 when he joined ONE Championship. “ONE: Legendary Quest” marked his 12th bout in the promotion.

Thani trains out of Monarchy MMA in Kuala Lumpur under Samir Mrabet, 34, of Brussels, Belgium. In addition, the Malaysian fighter regularly visits Team Quest in the United States for his training.

Red Corner

A fourth-generation Japanese, Akiyama was born Sung Hoon Choo in Ikuno-Ku, Osaka, Japan to Korean parents on July 29, 1975. He started his judo training when he was 3 years old and went on to become a third-dan black belt in judo and a black belt in Gaidojutsu.

Training out of his own gym Team Cloud in Tokyo, Japan, Akiyama made his ONE Championship debut at “ONE: Legendary Quest.” Before joining the promotion, he competed in K-1, DREAM and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, among others.

Fight Result

Akiyama and Thani ompeted in an MMA match in the welterweight division. Olivier Coste served as the referee.

After three five-minute rounds, the welterweight contest was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Coste raised the hand of Thani, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Winning at “ONE: Legendary Quest” improved the professional MMA record of Thani to 9 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, Akiyama now has 14 wins, 7 losses, 0 draw and 2 No Contests.

“ONE: Legendary Quest” Main Event

ONE Super Series debutante Alma Juniku, 18, of Australia challenged reigning ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Stamp Fairtex, 27, of Thailand in the main event. The Thai defending champion won via unanimous decision.
