[PHOTOS] Thailand vs Philippines: Pongsiri Mitsatit, Robin Catalan fight at ‘ONE: Warriors of Light’ in Bangkok

Thailand and the Philippines were among the 15 countries represented at “ONE: Warriors of Light.” It was the second ONE Championship event in 2019 held in Thailand.

Featuring three kickboxing contests, four Muay Thai matches and five mixed martial arts bouts, “ONE: Warriors of Light” took place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on May 10, 2019. The eighth bout of the evening was between Pongsiri “The Smiling Assassin” Mitsatit, 22, of Chiang Mai, Thailand and Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan, 28, of Iloilo, Philippines.

While Mitsatit was one of the six hometown fighters at “ONE: Warriors of Light,” Catalan solely represented the Philippines. Algeria, Australia, Cambodia, China, Chinese Taipei, Cyprus, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Portugal and the United States were also represented.

Catalan is a Muay Thai World Champion who started training in martial arts in 2006 . He would go on to win numerous tournaments in both wushu and Muay Thai, including the Philippines National Wushu Sanda Championship in 2007 and 2008 and a IFMA Muay Thai World Championship in 2011.

“ONE: Warriors of Light” marked Catalan’s eighth ONE Championship bout. He is training out of Catalan Fighting System in Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

Mitsatit is a Chiang Mai Muay Thai Champion who decided to pick up Muay Thai to learn how to protect himself as well as help to support his family financially. He made his professional MMA debut in 2014 and has rapidly emerged as one of Thailand’s most exciting talents.

“ONE: Warriors of Light” marked Mitsatit’s sixth ONE Championship bout. He is training out of Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand.

Fight Result

Mitsatit and Catalan competed in an MMA match in the strawweight division. Yoshinori Umeki served as the referee.

Umeki put a stop to the strawweight contest after 3 minutes and 5 seconds in the first round. Mitsatit knocked out Catalan via knee.

Winning at “ONE: Warriors of Light” improved the professional MMA record of Mitsatit to 10 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, Catalan now has 8 wins and 6 losses.

“ONE: Warriors of Light” Main Events

Petchdam Petchyindee Academy, 20, of Thailand and Elias “The Sniper” Mahmoudi, 21, of Algeria competed for the inaugural ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Championship in the co-main event. The Thai contender won via technical decision after an accidental groin attack in the fourth round.

Hiroaki “Kaibutsukun” Suzuki, 34, of Japan challenged reigning ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-o Gaiyanghadao, 32, of Thailand in the main event. The Thai defending champion won via unanimous decision.

The official open workout for “ONE: Warriors of Light” took place in Bangkok on April 25, 2019. It featured Nong-o, Petchdam and Pongsiri along with their fellow Thai ONE Championship athletes “The Iron Man” Rodtang Jitmuangnon, 21, Singtongnoi Por Telakun, 38, and Superlek Kiatmoo9, 23.
