[PHOTOS] Cyprus vs Malaysia: Panicos Yusuf, Mohammed Bin Mahmoud fight at ‘ONE: A New Era’ in Tokyo, Japan

Cyprus and Malaysia were among the 19 countries represented at “ONE: A New Era” at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan on March 31, 2019. It was the first ever ONE Championship event to take place in the country.

“ONE: A New Era” featured 11 mixed martial arts bouts and four ONE Super Series matches, which include two kickboxing contests and two Muay Thai contests. In the second bout of the evening, Panicos Yusuf, 33, of Cyprus faced Mohammed “Jordan Boy” Bin Mahmoud, 22, of Malaysia.

Yusuf was the only fighter from Cyprus on the “ONE: A New Era” card. Mahmoud solely represented Malaysia, as well.

Mahmoud is training out of Sampuri Muay Thai Gym Ampang. When he made his ONE Super Series debut at “ONE: Destiny of Champions” on December 7, 2018 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he defeated Stergos “Greek Dynamite” Mikkios, 28, of Greece and the United States.

On January 25, 2019, Mahmoud lost to Hiroaki “Kaibutsukun” Suzuki, 34, of Japan at “ONE: Hero’s Ascent” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. “ONE: A New Era” marked the Malaysian fighter’s third ONE Super Series bout.

Yusuf is of Cypriot and Filipino descent and is training out of All Powers Gym. A former ONE Warrior Series entrant, he made his ONE Super Series debut at “ONE: Reign of Kings” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on July 27, 2018 where he defeated Han Zi Hao, 23, of China.

On November 9, 2018, Yusuf lost to Muangthai P.K.Saenchaimuaythaigym of Thailand at “ONE: Heart of the Lion” at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. “ONE: A New Era” marked the Cypriot-Filipino martial artist’s third ONE Super Series bout.

Fight Result

Yusuf and Bin Mahmoud competed in a Muay Thai contest in the bantamweight division. Elias Dolaptsis served as the referee.

After three three-minute rounds, the Muay Thai bantamweight contest was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Dolaptsis raised the hand of Yusuf, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Winning at “ONE: A New Era” improved Yusuf’s professional Muay Thai record to 38 wins and 7 losses. On the other hand, Mahmoud now has 31 wins and 4 losses.

“ONE: A New Era” Main Event 

In the main event, Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, 35, of Japan challenged reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 35, of the Philippines in a rematch.
