[PHOTOS] New Zealand vs Japan: Mark Fairtex Abelardo, Daichi Takenaka fight at ‘ONE: Clash of Legends’ in Bangkok, Thailand

New Zealand and Japan were among the 14 countries to be represented at “ONE: Clash of Legends.” It was the first ONE Championship event in 2019 to be held in Thailand.

Featuring five Muay Thai contests and seven mixed martial arts bouts, “ONE: Clash of Legends” took place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on February 16, 2019. In the ninth bout of the evening, Mark “Tyson” Fairtex Abelardo, 27, of New Zealand and Daichi Takenaka, 29, of Japan.

Abelardo was the only fighter who represented New Zealand. Takenaka was one of the three fighters representing Japan.

Blue Corner

Born in Osaka, Japan on January 29, 1990, Takenaka has been competing professionally since 2012. A former Shooto Pacific Rim Featherweight Champion training out of Paraestra Izumi in Izumi, Osaka, Japan, he joined ONE Championship in 2018.

“ONE: Clash of Legends” marked Takenaka’s second ONE Championship bout. He is entering the cage as an undefeated fighter.

Red Corner

Abelardo was born in New Zealand on October 18, 1991 to Filipino parents and is currently training at Fairtex Pattaya in Pattaya, Thailand. He has been competing professionally since 2010.

In 2018, Abelardo earned victories in the second and third seasons of “Rich Franklin’s ONE Super Series.” The Filipino-Kiwi MMA fighter’s victory over Shinechagtga Zolstsetseg, 22, of Mongolia earned him a ONE Championship contract.

Fight Result

Abelardo and Takenaka competed in an MMA bout in the bantamweight division. Kemp Cheng served as the referee.

Cheng put a stop to the contest after 2 minutes and 34 seconds in the third round and raised the hand of Abelardo, who was declared the winner via doctor stoppage. This make the Filipino-Kiwi contender the first fighter to defeat Takenaka in a professional MMA bout.

Winning at “ONE: Clash of Legends” improved Abelardo’s professional MMA record to 18 wins and 5 losses. On the other hand, Takenaka now has 11 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw.

“ONE: Clash of Legends” Main Events

In the co-main event of the evening, Kongsak P.K.Saenchaimuaythaigym, 28, of Thailand faced Alaverdi “Babyface Killer” Ramazanov, 24, of Russia in a Muay Thai bout in the bantamweight division. The Thai contender won via split decision.

In the main event, Nong-o Gaiyanghadao, 32, of Thailand and Han Zi Hao, 23, of China competed for the inaugural ONE Super Series Bantamweight Muay Thai World Championship. The Thai contender won via unanimous decision.

Cambodia, China, France, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States were also represented at “ONE: Clash of Legends.” Check all the results here.
