Tokyo’s Tatsumitsu Wada to make ONE Championship debut at ‘ONE: Battle for the Heavens’ in Guangzhou, China

Fighting out of Japan, two-time DEEP Flyweight Champion Tatsumitsu “The Sweeper” Wada, 29, is scheduled to make his ONE Championship debut on July 7, 2018. The Japanese mixed martial artist and his Filipino-Australian opponent Reece “Lightning” McLaren are co-headlining “ONE: Battle for the Heavens” at the Guangzhou Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China.

Wada and McLaren will compete in the flyweight division at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens.” Currently reigning as the ONE Flyweight World Champion is Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, 29, of the Philippines.

Originally from the Yamanashi prefecture, Wada moved to Tokyo after high school to further his martial arts career. He started his training with karate and later added judo to his growing skill set.

Competing professionally since 2008, Wada has established a record of 19 wins, 8 losses, 2 draws and 1 No Contest. The beginning of his career was rough as he lost in his first five bouts, all in 2008, but in 2009, he had his first MMA win, which seemed to have given him the momentum that he needed.

Wada is riding a huge wave of momentum coming into his ONE Championship debut. He is currently on an eight-bout win streak, which includes five stoppage wins.

The last time Wada lost in the cage was in 2014 when he was submitted by Yuki Motoya at “Deep- 68 Impact” via rear-naked choke. In the same year, Wada redeemed himself by submitting Ryuichi Miki via rear-naked choke at “Deep- Dream Impact 2014: Omisoka Special.”

Following the victory over Miki, Wada defeated Gyu Hwa Kim and Jae Hyun So in 2015, Jae Nam Yoo, Yuya Shibata and Kai Kara-France in 2016 and Kosuke Suzuki in 2017. In Wada’s most recent bout, which was on April 28, 2018 at “Deep- 83 Impact,” he defeated Makoto Takahashi via unanimous decision.
